Richard Nelson Hall, Teacher
Have a look at the video I made with my students. I get such a kick out of seeing them enjoying playing.
My teaching career began back in the UK where from 1988 to 1990 I taught piano, jazz theory and improvisation at Chichester College of Technology. These performing arts students were mostly young adults and I remember fondly those first experiences of coaxing jazz solos out of newcomers to the style! Now that I'm very much immersed in the lives of my own kids, who are at elementary school, I find I also get great gratification from coaching wonderful performances from all young beginners.
My philosophy is that learning an instrument needs to be FUN, and students need to relate to the music they're playing. Whenever possible I transcribe their favorite tunes, whether it's themes like Star Wars and Harry Potter or perhaps hits by Cold Play and Foo Fighters, so we can study and learn them together. I teach the essential skills of listening, reading music, performance technique, music harmony and theory; and having had an uninterrupted career as a full time professional jazz musician since 1986 I specialize in jazz. Thought you'd never improvise? I can get you swinging' in no time!
"Richard Hall has the all too rare combination of being a fabulous professional musician and a fun-loving and highly-engaging piano teacher. This is the second teacher our 10 year old son Eli has had, and the contrast is remarkable. Eli now looks forward to his lessons, which Richard tailors to fit his particular musical interests. Yet Richard insists on the basics, and he is turning his students into fabulous young musicians." - Eli's Mom.
"Thank you so much for being so accommodating and wonderful to Helen. I remember dreading my piano lessons when I was a kid (of course, I was a teen and dreaded nearly everything) and it's wonderful for her to feel so confident and excited to play and practice and meet with you - it says a lot about you as a teacher." - Helen's Mom.
"The kids are enjoying the lessons and are enthusiastic about playing. Thanks for bringing joy to them with the music!" - Toby and Hanna's Mom.
"Steve says he learned more in that one lesson than a years worth of lessons when he was a kid!" - Steve's wife.
"Sonja seemed pretty excited after her first lesson and his been working on her songs and scales too." - Sonja's Mom.
"She is enjoying playing!" - Lily's Mom.
"Very cool, she seems really happy about the lessons." - Paxton's Mom.
"Thanks for being such a great teacher for them to start them on what is hopefully a long love of playing music." - Pierce and Logan's Mom.
"Savanna is excited about practicing the Annie song with her grandma." - Savanna's Mom.
"There was definitely a smile on his face on our way back home after the lesson." - Aidan's Mom.
"She's really loving it. Thanks!" - Aviva's Dad.
